Effective immediately, Ty Newberry of White Plains, MD has been named the Southeastern District Coach-In-Chief. Ty replaces Bob McCaig who served the USA Hockey Coaching Education Program and the Southeastern District for the past 14 years. Bob resigned the CIC position due to health reasons but will continue to serve as a Southeastern District Associate Coach-In-Chief.
Bob has played an instrumental role in the development of youth hockey programs in North America for nearly 40 years. Born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Bob won titles as a player at the Midget and Adult levels before becoming a coach at Lambton College in Sarnia, Ontario. In 1965, Bob became Director of the McCaig Hockey Academy in Sarnia, where he developed on-ice training modules for participants ranging from beginner to elite levels. In 1971, Bob was appointed Administrator of the Ontario Coaching Program, a position he held until 1987.
In 1988 he began working with the Georgia Special Olympics, organizing coaching and officiating clinics, and monitoring floor hockey events for five years. Using this experience, Bob became the Southeastern District Coach-In-Chief and Administrator for USA Hockey's Initiation Program.
As Coach-In-Chief, Bob developed and implemented the USA Hockey Coaching Education Program throughout the Southeastern District. He has also educated and trained instructors, plus been a part of several Southeastern District Select Camps and the Southeastern District National Camp Tryout.
In addition, Bob was named the Director of Hockey Atlanta, in which he developed on- and off-ice programs for both youth and adults and increased the number of coaching clinics annually from seven in 1987 to 100 current. From 1985 to 1987, he was the Director of Coaching Development for a local youth hockey association in Port Huron, Michigan, where he initiated a developmental program for both coaches and players titled "hockey for the fun of it." Bob earned a Masters Level Coaching Certification in both the U.S. and Canada, and has also served as an instructor for USA Hockey Inline. Bob was the 2003 recipient of USA Hockey's Walter Yaciuk Award, presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the Coaching Education Program during many years of service as a volunteer and is the recipient of the 2008 Southeastern District Directors Award.
Ty Newberry currently holds a Level 4 CEP certificate and has served as a Division 1 ACHA collegiate coach for the past five seasons. During that time he coached Penn State, West Virginia and Utah State. Ty has been a CEP Instructor for 10 years in the Michigan, Mid-American and Rocky Mountain Districts. He moved to the Southeastern District in 2000 and is currently the General Manager of the Fort Dupont Ice Arena in Washington, DC.
